Introduction
By acknowledging the importance of culture, promoting it's development and propitiating its practice, the Univa's high school in Guadalajara celebrated its 31th anual Cultural week. This event took place from may 26th to may 30th at the high school and university facilities of the school.
During the week, events took place such as expositions, conferences, mass events and competitions. The students were able to enjoy concerts such as the one with Blush and the rock concert were they got to saw students participating, a classical ballet suite, zumba classes, as well as the Chemistry and Physics expositions.
As a student, I got to experience this cultural event in the course of the week, and so i'd like to give you an insider's look into this anual mass event that my high school proudly organizes.

Opening ceremony:
The running theme of this 31th cultural week was charity, and so, in the opening ceremony we were greeted with examples of people mastering this remarkable human value. Figures such as Mother Teresa de Calcuta or Bono were mentioned. Then we saw performances such as Ballet or Jazz choreographies, and the choir of the school sang an acapella version of the song "Get Lucky". Since the cultural week was based on the World Cup of this year, celebrated in Brazil, all the performances were Brazil themed, and so the ornamentation of the place. They also told a story about a player of the Brazil team, who after failing to avoid its team from losing, got scarred for the rest of his life. I honestly don't see why they told us that since I can't find any positive message to it, nor I think it's related to charity at all, but it was interesting to know, I guess, and also Brazil and soccer themed. Oh, and the principal cut a red ribbon to signify the beggining of the week.

Day 1 of events:
Expositions:
Mass events:
Conference:
Competitions:
Expositions:
- Soy maestro, soy ecologista: In this exposition we got to see a brief glimpse at the personal lives of our teachers, but more specifically, on how they apply the metods we learn in school about ecology and sustentable development to their lifes. The exposition was arranged by our ecology teacher, Edson Ulloa, to show some metods in which we can use environmentalism in our lives, and was composed by a series of photographs of teachers from all the academies engaging in this practice. The exposition took place in the SUM’s lobby, and gained the attention of a lot of students who attended.
- Fotos futbol mexicano: This exposition showed a little bit of the history of Mexico in terms of football soccer. By means of photographs, newspaper clippings, and a dynamic video we got to saw how football really influences our culture and how important it is to some people. Also, there was a "futbolito" table, which dragged a great percentage of the attention in there.
Mass events:
- Classical ballet suite: In this event, we saw the girls from the ballet team of the school perform some classical ballet choreographies in which they had been working for weeks. I think this event showed ballet as a graceful and elegant dance, while also showing how easily ballet dancers can convey a story through body movement. I personally liked it, but what I did not like was how most of the people reacted to it. Because first the students went mad in order to enter the facilities –they even broke a door, and then fifteen minutes in everyone was desesperate to get out. In my opinion, it was a lack of respect to the girls who were performing, but I also think that all of the mass events celebrated in the SUM facilities were poorly organized. There were few mass events per day, so they should have prepared the place to receive more people.
Conference:
- Who you are: This conference, imparted by my teacher Joel Gallegos, has been one of my favorite events of the week because I actually could apply what I saw there in my own life. Joel showed us that grades, abilities or our parents are not what define us. And then he asked a question that struck me: what defines us then? He then proceeded by telling the story of three guys who redefined themselves (One being a jew a a concentration camp defined as freedomless, another guy being defined as heartless, and the third one being defined as loveless). After that, he talked about his own experiences and how he defined himself. Again, I really really learned a lot from him that day.
Competitions:
- Juegos didacticos: In this brief competition, a whole lot different interactive games stations were displayed in the school’s snack area. Varying from lottery to twister to snakes and ladders, students could participate and also de-stress themselves for a bit.
Day 2 of events:
Expositions:
Expo física: I went to this exposition because my team got selected to participate in it, but while being there i got to observe other people's project and i got marbled by some. There was, to mention some, a motor that functioned by pumped air, an hidraulic hand, an hidraulic bridge, a Tesla's coil, and my team's Waves pendulum. Even though i don't consider this year's Expo as good as the one last year, I think it was pretty flamboyant because the projects drew a lot of attention to the eye. I noticed a particular interest from students in this event that i did not see in other expositions from that week.

- Fotos de comunicación: If i'm being honest, i don't remember much from this event. The photos did not drew my attention like i think they should have.
Mass events:
- Una ventana al universo: In this event, we got a member of the astronomical club in our city as the special guest. He began telling us about his experience as an astrophysicist, and then he showed some images of things we can find in space. I actually found this event pretty interesting, and learned from it.
- Rock concert: Even though it was not obligatory, I decided to attend this concert so I could see my friend Giovanni play, and also the band of Mr. Awesome (Teacher Joel) called National Dog Empire. This event was pretty fun, and i enjoyed every single one of the bands who performed there. I remembered that everyone was singing along, and there were a lot of cheers from the audience. I really saw involvement from the students in this event.
Conference:
- Movilidad sustentable en GDL: In this conference we got four guests that were experts on the subject. The first one was a guy from the government who came to talk about the new city's project called "Bici Publica". In short terms, the goal of this program is to implement a new public transport in the form of bycicles. I think this one could be very useful, but they'd need to implement ciclo vias first to avoid a lot of accidents. Then came an engineer, who told us some suggestions and things to keep in mind when riding a bycycle. At the end came two guys from the program "Jovenes en movimiento" who talked about how the government should fix some things in the city before implementing that new program I mentioned early before. The conference was supposedly to end with a Q&A to the special guests, but since two of them began fighting with each other (They were, at the end, from opposing political parties so it was to expect) the conference ended practically in an abrupt way.
Competition:
- Expo quimica: I got to see some interesting projects in this chemistry fair. Most of the teams made makeup-related things (I guess because it's easier?), but I also saw an anti-acne treatment, shampoos, creams and even different flavored mayonnaise (Which was delicious, by the way). Like the Expo Fisica, i think the last year one was way better.
Day 3 of events:
Expositions:
Mass event:
Conference:
Competition:
Expositions:
- Expo cartel de modulo económico: This exposition was one of my favorites because a) it was really quick but b) it was also really interesting. This drawings managed to sum up perfectly fine the financial situation we are currently living in. Also, they showed solutions that seemed profitable to me.
- Publicidad con medios masivos de comunicación: There were different groups in the room, each one with an assigned mass media, explaining the relationship between communication and publicity, and how we perceive this union. The medias described there were the radio, television, internet and newspapers. It was an interesting subject, though not every group knew how to handle it well.
Mass event:
- Talent show: Ok so I probably should not being saying this, but I did not get a ticket to this event, I actually snuck in. It was not for a signature, but rather than my friends were going to perform there, and also my teachers, so I really wanted to be there. The show was pretty cool (though there was not much excitement from the audience as what i'd expected), and my friends did awesome. There were a lot of talented singers, dancers and musicians in there, and it was cool to see how much talent there was in my school.
Conference:
- Videojuegos y protesta social: This conference, held by our teacher Tony Valderrama, was really interesting and I really enjoyed it. He talked about how videogames influence our everyday lives just as much as our professional lives (yes, really!) while also discussing how social protests have gained popularity and involvemente thanks to the invention of social networks such as Twitter or Facebook.
Competition:
- Spelling bee: I went to this event to cheer a lot of friends who were participing in it. I think the event lacked more organization, but it was interesting to see for most of the time. But the public in there were really involved in the contest, and i think that made up for the bad organization.
Last day (Closing ceremony):
On this last day, we were supposed to attend some event that involved sports but... remember that ecological campaign I mentioned early on? We spend that whole day pulishing it, and actually making the final progress with it. But I asked people and they told me the fair was decent. And some paraescolar events were great.
I also did not attend the closing ceremony of this year. But I heard it was carnival themed, and the dances in it were cool. Everyone was cheerful in there.
